PP and PC are both common types of plastics with distinct properties and uses:
1. PP (Polypropylene)
- Chemical structure and properties
- Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer made from the monomer propylene. It has a relatively simple linear structure with methyl groups attached to the main carbon chain at regular intervals.
- It is known for its good chemical resistance. It can resist many acids, alkalis, and organic solvents, which makes it suitable for storing various chemical substances. For example, it is often used in chemical storage tanks and laboratory equipment.
- PP has a relatively high melting point, typically around 160 – 170°C, which gives it good heat resistance compared to some other plastics. This allows products made from PP to be used in applications where they may be exposed to moderately high temperatures, such as in some kitchenware like reusable food containers that can be heated in the microwave (although it’s important to check the product’s label for microwave – safe indication).
- It is a lightweight material, which is beneficial in applications where weight reduction is crucial, such as in automotive parts and packaging.
- PP also has good electrical insulating properties, making it useful in the electronics industry for components like insulators.
- Common applications
- In the packaging industry, PP is widely used for making plastic bags, food packaging films, and containers. Its clarity can vary from opaque to semi – transparent, depending on the manufacturing process, and it provides a good barrier against moisture and oxygen, helping to preserve the freshness of food products.
- In the automotive sector, PP is used to make interior parts such as dashboard components, door trims, and bumpers. Its lightweight nature helps to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle, improving fuel efficiency.

2. PC (Polycarbonate)
- Chemical structure and properties
- Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic polymer with a more complex molecular structure compared to PP. It contains carbonate groups in its backbone.
- One of the most notable properties of PC is its high impact resistance. It is extremely tough and can withstand significant force without breaking or cracking. This makes it ideal for applications where durability under stress is essential, such as in safety goggles, motorcycle helmets, and bullet – resistant glass (when combined with other materials).
- PC has excellent optical properties, including high transparency and low haze. It can be made into clear sheets or lenses with good light transmission, which is why it is used in applications like eyeglass lenses, CD and DVD discs, and some types of lighting fixtures.
- It has a relatively high heat deflection temperature, usually around 130 – 140°C, which means it can maintain its shape and mechanical properties under elevated temperatures. However, it may be sensitive to certain chemicals, especially strong alkalis and some organic solvents.
- Although PC is generally considered safe for many applications, there has been some concern about the potential release of bisphenol A (BPA) during degradation or under certain conditions. BPA – free PC alternatives have been developed to address these concerns.

- As mentioned before, it is a popular material for safety equipment such as face shields, riot shields, and sports protective gear due to its high impact resistance.
